Why choose us?

The Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts Half-Day program (Arts Half-Day) is a pre-college, pre-professional arts training program. In the morning, students from over 40 school districts attend their home district high school for core academic classes. In the afternoon, they join our program, which provides rigorous training in Dance, Music, Musical Theater, Design and Theater Production, Theater, and Visual Arts with a selection of over 200 arts courses, the scope and depth of our Half-Day program are comprehensive, encouraging students to step out of their comfort zones, appreciate and celebrate diversity, and embrace learning opportunities from setbacks. The daily classwork is experiential and emphasizes the artistic process. This approach fosters students&rsquo; artistic growth and prepares them for entrance to collegiate arts programs and/or careers in the arts.

REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION

<ul>
	<li>Students must be enrolled in their resident town&rsquo;s high school to be eligible for participation.</li>
	<li>Hartford residents interested in applying to Arts Half-day must enroll at Bulkeley High School for their academic classes to participate in the half-day program.</li>
	<li>Non-Hartford residents interested in applying to the Arts Half-day program should work with counselors at their high schools to schedule their academic classes in the morning before coming to the Arts Half-day for their arts courses in the afternoon.</li>
</ul>

Please note, not all districts are able to accommodate the half-day schedule.

We teach students skills they can use no matter what career path they choose. These skills include creative and critical thinking, commitment to an art form, discipline, effective collaboration, working in an ensemble, risk-taking, and a commitment to advancing social justice through the arts. Our program fosters artistic growth and prepares students for collegiate arts programs and/or careers in the arts.

The following priorities are used in the placement process and can increase the chance of a placement if the school has available seats. To receive priority, you must apply during the on-time application period and make the school your first choice. Applicants receive priority in the order listed below.

Special Features

The Visual and Performing Arts theme encourages students to develop artistic creations to communicate thoughts, feelings, and emotions. Students have access to specialized courses in art, music, dance, digital arts, creative writing, theater design and other forms of performance art.
